ECG test in Chennai — quick and painless

An ECG (electrocardiogram, sometimes written EKG) records the small electrical signals that make your heart beat. A technician places several soft electrode stickers on your chest, arms and legs, and the machine captures your heart’s rhythm over a few seconds and prints or stores a trace. It is completely painless — nothing enters the body and no electricity is put into you; the electrodes only listen.

From that trace, a doctor can read a great deal: how fast and regular your heartbeat is, how the electrical impulse travels through the heart, and signs that may point to particular conditions. It is one of the most common and useful first-line heart tests precisely because it is so quick, safe and informative.

• Heart rhythm — whether your heartbeat is regular, too fast, too slow or irregular.
• Signs of certain heart conditions that affect the electrical signal.
• A baseline trace to compare against in future, useful for ongoing care.

An ECG is a snapshot of a few seconds. If your symptoms come and go, your doctor may follow it up with continuous Holter monitoring over 24 hours or more, which is far more likely to capture an intermittent problem.

These two tests work together. An ECG is the quick first look; a Holter monitor is the long, continuous recording for when a snapshot is not enough.

• ECG — a few seconds, done in the clinic, ideal for an immediate snapshot of rhythm and heart health.
• Holter — 24 hours or more of continuous recording, ideal for symptoms that come and go.
• Your doctor decides which is needed based on your symptoms; sometimes both are used.

A doctor may recommend an ECG for symptoms or as part of an assessment. Common reasons include:
