EEG test in Chennai — recording brain activity

An EEG (electroencephalogram) records the tiny electrical signals produced by the brain’s nerve cells. A technician places a set of small sensors (electrodes) on your scalp, usually with a little gel, and the machine records the patterns of brain activity while you rest. It is painless and safe — like an ECG for the heart, the sensors only listen; no electricity is passed into you.

The recording shows the rhythms of your brain’s activity, and changes in those patterns can give a neurologist important clues. Sometimes the test includes gentle activation steps — such as breathing deeply for a short time, or looking at a flashing light — which can make certain patterns easier to see. Your technician explains each step as you go.

• Seizures and epilepsy — a common reason for an EEG, to look at the brain’s electrical patterns.
• Blackouts, fainting or unexplained episodes of altered awareness.

A calm, straightforward appointment

For a routine EEG you sit or lie comfortably while the sensors are placed and the recording is made — typically around 20 to 40 minutes, though the appointment is a little longer to allow for setup. You stay still and relaxed; sometimes you may be asked to close your eyes, breathe deeply for a short time, or watch a flashing light. None of it is painful.

Prompt reporting and joined-up care

After the recording, the EEG is reviewed and a report is prepared promptly for your doctor or neurologist. Because our clinic, diagnostics and pharmacy work together, any follow-up consultation, test or treatment can be arranged smoothly without you having to start over somewhere else.

Your doctor or our team will give you specific instructions, but a few general points usually apply:

• Come with clean, dry hair and avoid oils, gels or sprays, so the sensors make good contact.
• Follow any instructions about sleep — for some EEGs you may be asked to sleep less the night before.
• Ask your doctor before stopping any regular medication — usually you continue as normal unless told otherwise.
• Allow a little extra time for setup, and bring a list of your current medicines.

After the test you can wash out the gel and return to your normal day straight away.
